Year 11 Castle Manor Students Matti Kasperek and Ben Gibson have been awarded 'Young Person in Service Awards' from the Haverhill Lions in recognition of their volunteering in our community. Both boys were part of a small group of students who volunteered at the Food Bank for four months as well as contributing to conservation work at Depden care farm, helping to organise the Haverhill Youth Market and being a Community Ambassador litter picking around the town. All students achieved an Asdan Certificate for their project which has stood them in good stead when applying for college places. Matti and Ben went the extra mile to volunteer for a total of fifty hours within a year. Ben has also used the evidence to help him complete his Duke of Edinburgh volunteering section.
Haverhill Lions Club President Len Russell and his Deputy Phillip Cheesmur were impressed with the boys' positive contribution to their community and awarded them with a framed certificate and club flag. Having met both boys and Headteacher Mrs Whitcombe, Len explained the work of the Lions: 'We are a respected international organization; we volunteer in our local community, and are a friend to people in need. Its lovely to see young people who have the same ethos as the Lions and we hope more students will want to get involved in similar projects '
Head Teacher Mrs Whitcombe said' I am so proud of these boys, we are working hard as a school to embed the importance of being kind to each other'
