Subject Overview
The English Language GCSE is an opportunity to explore creative reading, writing and provide insight into how writers express their views. It is 50% reading skills and 50% writing skills. The exam board Castle Manor Academy uses is AQA, and this qualification will be studied alongside AQA’s English Literature GCSE.
Course Information
The English Language GCSE is designed to inspire and motivate students, providing appropriate stretch and challenge whilst ensuring students of all abilities develop the skills they need to read, understand, and analyse a wide range of texts covering the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.
As well as this, they need to be able to write clearly, coherently and accurately using a range of vocabulary and sentience structures. There is an opportunity to display skill and flair in writing both in fiction and non-fiction texts in an artful and engaging way.
Students will also have the opportunity to develop their speaking and listening skills.
Assessment
Assessment for this course is through 100% written examination. There are two compulsory written exams at the end of Year 1 and their there is a non-examined assessment of Spoken Language.
Progression
This is an important, core course for all students no matter what they intend to do after Year 11. Many students go on to study Language and Literature at A-level and use Language in many work-based learning opportunities.
