Art
Through Art we explore different cultures as well as British Values. We inspire our students to contribute to exhibitions and organise visits. We teach our Art students to be creative thinkers, inventive problem solvers and resilient workers.
Year 7 – Students are taught the elements of art during their first year (Tone, line, composition, form and texture.) Lessons are delivered through teacher led demonstrations to create a masterclass of art skills that focus predominantly on drawing and painting. Students learn key art vocabulary as featured on their knowledge organiser. They are taught how to draw and paint still life, figures and Natural forms/ landscapes. They look at relevant Artists and start to analyse their own art as well as other artists. Year 7 have a two 50 minute lessons of Art weekly and have monthly home learning tasks.
Year 8 – Students study a wide range of cultural Art to include Oriental, Aboriginal, African, Indian and British Culture. They use a range of materials and techniques to develop a final outcome that has been inspired by the culture they are studying. Year 8 have two 50 minute lessons of art weekly and home learning is set monthly.
Year 9 – Students learn techniques such as proportion, scale and composition through portraiture and figurative work. The final term includes either a gallery or artist in resident visit to consider Art in context and career opportunities. Students develop their own piece based on the theme Identity and study relevant Artists and designers. Having chosen Art as an option Year 9 have a double lesson of Art weekly for one term. Home learning is set to support the learning done in class.
Years 10 & 11– Over two years students work in a variety of materials such as drawing, printing, painting and sculpture to meet the AQA Fine Art criteria.
They record their own responses in sketchbooks, slideshows or mounted on display board set around various themes. Students base their studies on recording from observation, development of their own ideas, historical sources and contemporary exhibitions. The expectation of the course is at least two projects with two final pieces and an exam project with a final piece produced in the second year during a ten-hour timed exam. Key stage 4 Art further develops skills and practices introduced throughout Key stage 3 as well as preparing them for further studies at A level or College if students wish to pursue it.
Mrs Baldwin and Mrs Farrow both teach key stage three art. Lesson content and skills covered are the same in all classes to aid progression in the following year.
