Castle Manor Academy

Year 9 Geography

Welcome to Geography!

Geography explains the past, illuminates the present and prepares us for the future. What could be more important than that?

Michael Palin, 2007

We believe in a geography curriculum that can inspire awe and wonder for all of our students. Castle Manor Academy Geography will provide students with new ways of thinking about the world. They will leave with powerful ways of analysing, explaining and understanding the world and be able to see beyond their own locality (whilst also having a clear understanding of how different processes and developments have affected their local area). Students will work hard to ensure that through an examination of their local area, they can feel proud of where they have come from. Whilst looking at different countries/continents, we will ensure different perspectives and experiences are covered so that an understanding of the diverse nature of the country/continent is developed as opposed to a narrow, often stereotypical view of a country.

Curriculum Intent

In Year 9 Geography we focus on global issues and how interconnected we are.  We start by teaching a unit on climate change. This is a global issue that impacts of every aspect of human life, economically, socially and politically. From this we move onto a study of glaciation.  This builds on from the climate change unit as we examine the causes and impacts of glacier retreat.  We explore some of the physical processes that have shaped landscapes and how glaciers have played a part in this. We study the economic and environmental benefits of glaciers and both local and global scales.

Next, we study the economy and examine how the workforce has been changing. We assess the roles of TNCs as the driving force behind the global economy and evaluate the importance of the quaternary sector in the UK. To broaden the students outlook and enrich their lives through exploring cultural differences, we then teach a unit titled ‘fantastic places’. Here we learn about a range of environments such as Svalbard and Death Valley that are so different from our daily lives and experiences. This also prepares the students for GCSE Geography where they study a range of landscapes from around the world. To further highlight our interconnected world, we teach a unit on conflict, where we explore a range of causes and consequences of conflicts at local, national and global scales. We map and explore current conflicts, discussing the causes and possible solutions. We complete Year 9 by undertaking a detailed study of China to examine the unprecedented global influence of this superpower.
