Welcome to Maths
Mathematics is important because it provides the skills, knowledge and understanding for young people and adults to progress in work, education and life.
At Castle Manor Academy we therefore believe that students deserve a creative and ambitious mathematics curriculum, rich in skills and knowledge, which ignites curiosity and prepares them well for everyday life and future employment.
Our Head of department Mrs Jackson and Second in charge of Mathematics, Mrs Humphry, spend time reviewing students’ assessments from Year 8 and use this information to adapt the Year 9 Curriculum Plans accordingly each academic year.
In the Autumn Term our Year 9 students complete Career lessons in Maths showcasing where they can go with Maths; giving students the opportunity to discuss how many is used in a huge variety of different careers including STEM careers.
Year 9 will celebrate Money Week in June giving them the chance to learn about financial Maths.
During the Spring Term our gifted and talented Year 9 students compete in the National UKMT Junior Mathematical Challenge. It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency to make students think. The problems on the Junior Maths Challenge are designed to make students think, most are accessible yet still challenge those with more experience.
During Activities week in the Summer Mrs Jackson arranges a day for our Year 9 students to work with the Ministry of Defence for a day of problem-solving activities.

The Mathematics Curriculum Plan prepares students at KS3 and KS4 to achieve the best GCSE grade possible. Progress for all students is implemented through our lesson structure, frequent interleaving of prior learning, knowledge of mathematical facts, concepts and key mathematical vocabulary.
In each topic area within our Maths Curriculum Plan, the topics are broken into key strands which are linked the National Curriculum for KS3 & KS4. Within the Curriculum there are many links between different areas of mathematics.
The Curriculum Plan for mathematics is reviewed and adapted for all year groups when required to ensure a coherent learning journey from KS2 to KS3 and then to KS4.
